Wenn man sich über Jahre so intensiv mit der Route 66 und der Fotografie befasst hat, wie wir das getan haben, liegt es eigentlich nahe, daraus einen Bildband zu machen. Die Idee hatte uns schon seit längerer Zeit beschäftigt. Im Mai 2015 lernten wir in Amarillo, Texas anlässlich einer Route 66 Reise unseren amerikanischen Freund Nick Gerlich kennen, der die Route 66 wie kaum ein anderer zu seinem Lebensinhalt gemacht hat. Er war sofort bereit, die Textbeiträge zu liefern. Wer könnte besser geeignet sein, dem Leser die „Mother Road“ in all ihren Facetten nahe zu bringen, als er? An anderer Stelle in diesem Blog haben wir ausführlich über unsere Exkursionen mit ihm entlang der Route 66 berichtet. Bei diesen Gelegenheiten und weiteren Reisen sind tausende von Fotos entstanden. Ellen hat die Straße fotografisch dokumentiert und die Route 66 zur Hauptdarstellerin dieser Dokumentation gemacht.

174 ihrer schwarz-weiß Fotografien zeigen die Landschaften, die Bauwerke, die Städte, Motels und Tankstellen, Verfall und Wiederbelebtes, Bekanntes und Unbekanntes – kurz alles, was die Route 66 ausmacht. Nick’s Texte beleuchten die Hintergründe und die Geschichte der Straße von den Anfängen bis heute in ausführlichen Essays zu den gezeigten Fotografien.

„A Matter of Time – Route 66 through the Lens of Change“ ist Bestandteil der Reihe „The Charles M. Russell Center Series of Art & Photography of the American West“ und wird im Oktober 2019 im Verlag University of Oklahoma Press erscheinen.

We have spent so much time taking a close photographic look at Route 66 over the past years, that a photography book seemed like a logical step. We had the idea for quite some time. On our 66 trip in May 2015, we met our American friend Nick Gerlich, a Route 66 historian and enthusiast, in Amarillo, Texas. He is the perfect project partner and immediately got on board to write the texts to go with the images. In this blog, we have written all about our travels with Nick along the Mother Road. Ellen has extensively documented the road photographically on these trips and made Route 66 the main character of all her images.

The forthcoming book features 174 of her black and white photographs, portraying landscapes, buildings, cities and small towns, motels and gas stations, decay and revival, familiar and unknown – everything Route 66 is about. Nick’s texts give the reader the background and history of the road from its beginnings to today in detailed essays.
